Exclusive Interview: Geraldine Viswanathan and Dacre Montgomery of The Broken Hearts Gallery

9/17/2020 • 2 min read

In THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY, writer/director Natalie Krinsky spins the story of a young woman, Lucy, struggling to overcome a tough breakup, as she decides to open her own gallery. This isn't your typical art space, however; it's a spot where people can leave trinkets from past relationships as cathartic mementos.

We attend the virtual junket for the movie, which gave us a chance to speak with Krinsky and her stars about the movie. The filmmaker explained how she explored ideas that are visceral and relatable, beginning with her connection to the story. "It was based on my own life, I will sheepishly admit."

"For me," Krinsky added, "it was very important for young women to see a lead of a film that asks the world to love her because she’s weird."

A large part of bringing this story to life was the development of on-screen chemistry between the leads, Geraldine Viswanathan and Dacre Montgomery. Admittedly, there wasn't much actual "development" required, as the two clicked immediately. "We got super lucky, I think the movie gods really shined down [on us]," said Viswanathan. She added, "the chemistry was really organic. It’s a hard thing to feign." Montgomery  mentioned that they only had "a week to rehearse together, and just [dove] straight in."

Dacre also spoke about the core theme of this feel-good film. "Life is one long learning curve. Everyone has ups and downs, and that’s not just sort of an individualized thing," he said. "If you meet someone who you fall in love with, hopefully, they can be your best friend and provide a really great additive to your crossroads — Lucy really changes Nick's direction for the better."
