Horror might be the most robust movie genre around, and it keeps going and growing. There are more horror movies of different tones and ambitions than ever before. Big and small, loud and quiet, there's a horror movie for pretty much everyone. Zach Cregger, the director of BARBARIAN, recently noted that horror "hasn’t abandoned its core, it’s just attracted a lot more people that would not necessarily think about horror movies to get on board and get on the horror train."
And the train keeps gaining momentum! A wide range of horror movies is set for release in 2024. There are new stories, sequels, reimaginings, horror comedies, and some reissued classics.
In short, the theatrical horror scene is going to be great going forward. As Cregger says, "Horror offers this collective experience, the vibration in the room when you’re all together feeling fear, and it’s so much more powerful than when you’re just watching it at home on your TV." Here are the scary movies in theatres now, and the new horror movies coming to theaters in 2024.

The First Omen

Immaculate

Cecilia’s warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors. [March 22]

Children can be such monsters. After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. [April 19]
Tarot
When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings – never use someone else’s deck – they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings. [May 3]
The Strangers: Chapter 1
Madelaine Petsch ("Riverdale") stars as a young woman on a road trip with her fiancé. But when they stop at a remote vacation rental in the woods, they become the prey of a vicious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason, and must use courage and cunning to survive one long, terrifying night. [May 17]
The Watchers
Follows Mina, a 28-year-old artist, as she gets stranded in an extensive, immaculate forest in western Ireland. After finding shelter, she becomes trapped alongside three strangers, stalked by mysterious creatures each night. [June 7]
A Quiet Place: Day One
Experience the day the world went quiet. Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou star in the movie that explores what happened in New York City when the QUIET PLACE aliens first arrived — and offers a startling POV on how the world changed forever. [June 28]
MaXXXine
Director Ti West and writer/star Mia Goth team up a third time for the closing chapter in their fame-focused horror trilogy that began with X and PEARL. The third film follows Goth's character Maxine as she seeks her fortune in 1980s Los Angeles. [July 5]
Longlegs
FBI Agent Lee Harker is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes unexpected turns, revealing evidence of the occult. Harker discovers a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again. [July 12]
Cuckoo
In 2018, Tilman Singer released his first movie, the audacious and very odd LUZ. We don't know a lot about his second feature, CUCKOO, coming this year from INFINITY POOL distributor NEON, but it stars Hunter Schafer of "Euphoria," and Dan Stevens, Jessica Henwick, Marton Csókás, and Greta Fernández. Frankly, the weirdness of LUZ is enough to have us excited to see what Singer does next. [August 9]
Alien: Romulus
The new ALIEN movie has more of a horror angle than previous films in the series — it's likely to be the most chilling entry since the original ALIEN's even mix of horror and sci-fi. Cailee Spaeny stars, and the cast also includes Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Read more about ALIEN: ROMULUS here. [August 16]
Smile 2
SMILE writer/director Parker Finn follows up his horror hit. We don't know much about SMILE 2 at this point, but Kyle Gallner, Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage and Rosemarie DeWitt are all in the cast. [October 18]
Terrifier 3
Things are just coming together for the sequel to the surprise horror hit fall 2022. TERRIFIER 3 will pit franchise villain Art The Clown (David Howard Thornton) against returning heroine Sienna (Lauren LaVera) in a rematch that somehow moves forward from the bizarre ending of TERRIFIER 2. Director Damien Leone returns with a much larger budget — oh, and this one is set at Christmas. [October 25]
Nosferatu
Filmmaker Robert Eggers (THE WITCH, THE LIGHTHOUSE, THE NORTHMAN) reveals his take on the vampire classic. “It’s a scary film," Eggers told Empire. "And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case." NOSFERATU stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe. [December 25]
