An event like the original moon landing is too important to leave to chance. So, in the romantic dramedy FLY ME TO THE MOON, a crack marketing pro is brought in to help stage a fake moon landing that NASA could broadcast in the event the real manned Apollo 11 moon mission did not go as planned.
With Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in the lead roles, FLY ME TO THE MOON looks like a very classic sort of romantic drama laced with comedy. Honestly, the two of them together, in late '60s costumes, is enough of a draw that the added unusual aspect of the moon landing is like a cherry on top. Here's the FLY ME TO THE MOON trailer and more info about the movie.
When Is the Fly Me to the Moon Release Date?
Sony PIctures will release FLY ME TO THE MOON in movie theaters on July 12, 2024.
Watch the New Fly Me to the Moon Trailer
The first trailer for FLY ME TO THE MOON featured a lot of the two leads even as it set up the story and threw in a Stanley Kubrick joke. (Which calls back to the real-world conspiracy theory that the moon landing was actually faked, with broadcast footage directed by Kubrick.) This new trailer above gives us a more broad view of the overall movie and its blend of comedy and dramatic tension.
Is Fly Me to the Moon a True Story?
Absolutely not. FLY ME TO THE MOON is fiction. It is rooted in a true story, as the Apollo 11 mission did take place in 1969, and did result in men walking on the moon for the first time. But the main characters in this movie are fictitious, and so is the story around them.
Scarlett Johansson Produces as Well
Scarlett Johansson has been an executive producer on two movies — the 2011 documentary THE WHALE (not to be confused with the more recent movie of the same name by Darren Aronofsky) and her BLACK WIDOW spinoff for Marvel. Here, she worked as a full producer, shepherding the movie from script to finished edit.
"The most challenging projects to find are romantic comedies and dramedies,” Johansson told EW. "The totally original script by Rose Gilroy was what excited me most about this film. It is a big picture movie that feels both nostalgic and so modern and the kind of movie I'm always reaching for that you rarely get to see in theaters these days."
Who's in the Cast of Fly Me to the Moon?
The cast of FLY ME TO THE MOON is led by the duo of Scarlett Johansson as Kelly Jones and Channing Tatum as Cole Davis. The cast also features Jim Rash as Lance Vespertine, who seems to be the commercial director brought in to make the fake moon landing look real, and Woody Harrelson as Moe Berkus, the Fed who recruits Kelly Jones.
FLY ME TO THE MOON opens on July 12.
