In GODZILLA VS KONG, the two most infamous monsters in the movie world square off in an epic battle while the humans of Earth try to avoid their building-squashing footsteps and, hopefully, stay alive through monster-created chaos.
We had a chance to speak with Millie Bobby Brown, who appeared in the previous movie, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, after rocketing to fame on "Stranger Things." She reprises her character Madison for the new movie and told us about the evolution of her character. "She’s died her hair black. She’s going through her grungy, emo-phase." Brown added that "she’s definitely going through her own journey. She’s found her agenda, her motive, which is finding what is provoking Godzilla. Which is really nice to see a young girl kind of trying to navigate her own personal life but also trying to focus on her own work."
Brown's co-star Julian Dennison, who plays Madison’s friend Josh, also discussed the relationship between his and Brown's characters. "It was nice seeing a relationship between people that isn’t just romantic," he said. "We have each other’s back. Even though, to be honest, we are opposite genders, it doesn’t have to anything past that. We can do something greater than ourselves."
Rebecca Hall plays Ilene Andrews and she also has perhaps the most screen time with Kong. Hall makes it seem like shooting scenes opposite a fully-CGI character can be as weird as you might expect. "For the most part," Hall said, "we are just gazing at somebody holding a flashlight at a wall for an eye-line. So, yeah, it’s challenging.” Hall credited director Adam Wingard with helping create an atmosphere that felt like the real thing, saying, “He would play music for us, that may or may not have ended up being in [the movie], or sound effects.” She joked, "Sometimes he would even make the sound effects himself!"
When we spoke to Wingard, he stressed why this is such a fantastic movie to experience on the big screen, saying, “This is something I’ve been building up to all my life. This is the type of film that made me wanna make movies. So, you know, this is such an opportunity to show people what I can do."
