New Cate Blanchett Movies, From Tár to Borderlands

9/29/2022 • 4 min read

Cate Blanchett is one of our greatest living talents. She elevates every movie in which she appears, full stop. In 2022, Blanchett delivers one of her most powerful performances to date, in the movie TÁR. But that’s not all she has coming.

As if to prove that she still has the knack for surprising audiences, Blanchett will soon star in one of the biggest video game movies ever made. There are more new Cate Blanchett movies coming in the next year, too, as well as some television projects. Here’s what we have to look forward to.

The Thunderous Drama Of Tár

TÁR sounds like a true story, but it is entirely fictional. Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, the groundbreaking conductor of a major German Orchestra. As the movie opens her career seems to be at its apex — her book is about to be published and she is prepping for a performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. She's a rock star inasmuch as it's possible for someone in the world of classical music to experience that sort of fame.

But everything is about to break, and TÁR turns into an exploration of power, image and personality, all filtered through one of Blanchett's most exceptional performances.

The Bizarre Blast of Borderlands

BORDERLANDS is from director Eli Roth and Craig Mazin, based on the video game series in which players explore a planet called Pandora (no relation to the one in James Cameron's AVATAR) in search of relics and loot — all of which is obtained through lots and lots of shooting.

In addition to Blanchett, the cast features Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis. That's a great talent roster to bring to life the outrageous and frankly weird characters that populate the game.

Future Movie Projects

In addition to those movies, Blanchett is set to star in Pedro Almodovar's next movie, A MANUAL FOR CLEANING WOMEN. We don't know much about her role, but the movie is an adaptation of Lucia Berlin's short story collection of the same name, originally published in 2015.

And she will also star in THE NEW BOY, by Australian writer/director Warwick Thornton. It's the story of "a 9-year-old Aboriginal orphan boy who arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun."

Blanchett Is Back On Television, Too

While Cate Blanchett’s career has focused almost exclusively on theatrical features since the mid-‘90s, she did get her start on Australian television. Since 2020, Blanchett has appeared in a handful of limited television series — and she’s doing a few more, too. She leads the drama “Disclaimer,” and will play Lady Marchmain in a new version of “Brideshead Revisited.”

On Netflix, Blanchett provides the voice for Spazzatura in Guillermo del Toro's PINOCCHIO (which may still get a limited theatrical release) and narrates Paul Feig's new movie, THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL.

TÁR opens limited on October 7 and will expand throughout the month.
