Movie sequels are baked so deeply into filmmaking history that you cannot separate the idea of movies from the concept of sequels. While we didn't start seeing movies with a numeral designating sequel status until the '50s or '60s, the first movie sequel dates back to the early days of the silent film era.
After THE GODFATHER PART II won Best Picture, and the Star Wars movie series became the new paradigm for Hollywood, sequels became more popular than ever. But you're not here for history! You want to know what movie sequels are coming out in 2023, and what sequels are on the calendar even further out than that. Here you go: These are the sequels coming to movie theatres.

James Gunn closes out his Guardians trilogy, and his tenure at Marvel Studios, with this final outing. At the end of the first part of Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune, the story was just starting to roll, with Paul Atreides taking a leadership role in the native Fremen population of the desert planet Arrakis. Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau are somehow linked. So when one uses their powers, they swap places in space with one of the others. This is actually a HUNGER GAMES prequel but don't hold it against us for including it in a sequel round-up. The idea is close enough! Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake return as Poppy and Branch — and it turns out that Branch has had a secret family all this time! Branch has four brothers, and together they were the massively popular singing group BroZone. Then the other four walked away, leading Branch to renounce his family. But when Branch leans that his brother Floyd (singer Troye Sivan) has been kidnapped, he and Poppy race to reunite the rest of his estranged family, John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs) and Clay (Kid Cudi), and find Floyd. All we really know about the next GHOSTBUSTERS movie is that it returns the action to New York City, and will set the young proteges up in the firehouse used by the classic characters. [December 20]
Aquaman and his half-brother Orm are forced to reconcile to some degree in order to fend off a threat to Atlantis. That's right, AQUAMAN 2 is a buddy action comedy! Read more about AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM here. [December 25]
Ti West's movie X, starting Mia Goth, was a horror hit. The follow-up, PEARL, was an oddball surprise that further enamored fans of the first movie. Now, MAXXXINE reteams West and Goth for a third exploration of their twisted shared vision. [2023 Release TBA]

We’ve got to wait until 2024 for George Miller’s next chapter in the Mad Max story, which continues with this prequel focused on the rise of Charlize Theron’s character Furioso. We won't have long to wait for the second half of DEAD RECKONING. The eighth MISSION movie comes out less than a year after the first part. Since we haven't seen the first part yet, we won't even speculate on the story, but we can guess that the action sequences will be worth the wait. [June 28, 2024]

Writer/director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix reunite for a second JOKER movie. Lada Gaga plays Harley Quinn, likely with a few character tweaks that fit this particular vision of the Joker. And the production will be a musical of some kind, which sounds wild at first — until you realize that it might be the perfect way to visualize the next stage of Arthur Fleck's life. Director Ridley Scott is making GLADIATOR 2 at last. The project went into development more than 20 years ago but working out the story took a long time! Paul Mescal (AFTERSUN) looks set to star as Lucius, seen as a boy in the original movie, who now investigates his true parentage as he strives for power. [November 22, 2024]
Much of AVATAR 3 was filmed at the same time as THE WAY OF WATER, and since that second movie in James Cameron's series is now one of the highest-grossing movies ever released, the third movie's release is a certainty. AVATAR 3 will explore more of Pandora and introduce many new characters as it hits the storyline with what Cameron has described as "a wrecking ball." [December 20, 2024]
The first outing of this techno-babysitter was an immediate hit and Universal wasted no time in pushing a sequel forward. Much of the cast and crew will reunite, and the only downside of M3GAN 2.0 is that we have to wait two years to see it. [January 17, 2025]
