Jordan Peele's Nope: Everything You Need To Know

2/16/2022 • 4 min read

(Updated 06/30/2022)

There is currently no bigger name in horror than Jordan Peele. A few years ago, maybe fans of the former comedian worried he would have trouble transitioning to genre director. If so, those fears have been thoroughly trashed by his two movies: the cultural juggernaut GET OUT and its super-creepy follow-up, US. A new Jordan Peele movie is a major motion picture event.

It also helps that Peele makes movies at his own pace, and in relative secrecy, so that each new one arrives with an aura of mystery and anticipation few other directors can conjure. When we sit down to a new Jordan Peele movie, we don't know exactly what they’re about — we just know that they look creepy and good.

All of which brings us to NOPE, Peele’s big third outing. Let’s take a closer look at what we can expect from this sure-to-be giant film, including the final trailer, which comes complete with a lot of new info about the movie.

When Does Nope Come Out?

NOPE opens on a prime summer date: July 22. Late July is typically where studios place their biggest tentpole films, so it’s safe to say a lot of confidence is going into NOPE’s release date. Whether that’s due to Peele’s reputation or the quality of the film itself, NOPE appears strong enough to wrestle with other big summer movies.

Watch the Last Nope Trailer

While the first trailer for NOPE only hinted at the movie having something to do with a presence in the sky, this last trailer isn't shy about revealing it: This is a UFO movie. We even see one craft in this trailer! But knowing that basic fact doesn't really tell us too much about the movie. Consider US, about which we knew some details that seemed pretty big — and then which turned on a surprise that no one saw coming.

What Is Nope About?

For a long time we couldn't tell you anything about the story in NOPE because we didn't know! And there is likely still a great deal we do not know, but one thing is certain: NOPE is about an encounter between a family and some kind of unearthly craft. In other words, a UFO.

But that's just part of the story. There's a notable Western influence, with characters directly involved in the horse training business outside Hollywood. All these cowboy hats and dusty vistas give off strong TREMORS vibes, which is never a bad thing. And there's a family angle, as the movie follows a pair of enterprising siblings whose father falls victim to, well, something.

Who Is in Nope?

The most familiar faces from the trailer belong to Steven Yeun of "Walking Dead" fame and, of course, Daniel Kaluuya, who starred in Peele’s amazing GET OUT. The film also prominently features singer Keke Palmer. And for those who indulge in ‘90s nostalgia, NOPE has a big role for ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES and THE CROW villain Michael Wincott.

Who Made Nope?

We're asking this as a matter of formality. By this point, it should be no secret that NOPE was written and directed by Jordan Peele, a horror auteur whose name above the title means more than the film’s cast, plot, or trailer.

Peele reunites with his GET OUT and US composer Michael Abels, who did the score. He's got Hoyte Van Hoytema, who has been Christopher Nolan's regular cinematographer, manning the camera. Ruth De Jong, who did production design for US, is also on board, and "The White Lotus" costumer Alex Bovaird took care of the costumes. That's a top-notch crew.

NOPE opens on July 22.
