Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken: Everything You Need to Know

6/14/2023 • 4 min read

Anyone who knows monsters from mythology and movies probably has a set image of the Kraken as a massive underwater beast. You can't bargain or reason with the Kraken — as characters experienced in CLASH OF THE TITANS — you can only hope to survive the encounter. Mermaids are more popularly good, as seen in THE LITTLE MERMAID, even if the original stories about those lady/fish hybrids are more complicated.Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken | Cinemark

In RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN, the main character, Ruby, doesn't realize that she's a Kraken. She thinks she's just a not-entirely-normal teenage girl trying to fit in. But when she discovers her true heritage — and begins to understand what is expected of her future — a titanic adventure unfolds. This latest RUBY GILLMAN trailer sets up the story and lets us know who's voicing the most important characters. (More on that in a moment.) And it shows us just how terrifying a Kraken can be, even when she's the hero.

The Cast of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

Lana Condor voices Ruby Gillman, and Toni Collette plays her overprotective mother, Agatha Gillman. Jane Fonda voices Grandmamah, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas and Ruby's grandmother. Liza Koshy voices Ruby's best friend, the larger-than-life Margot. And Annie Murphy voices Chelsea Van Der Zee, the popular new girl at school — who also happens to be a mermaid.

Additionally, there are characters voiced by Colman Domingo, Will Forte, Jaboukie Young-White, Eduardo Franco, Sam Richardson, Blue Chapman, Ramona Young, and Echo Kellum and Nicole Byer.

The Filmmakers Behind Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

RUBY GILLMAN is directed by Kirk DeMicco (THE CROODS) and co-directed by Faryn Pearl (TROLLS WORLD TOUR) and produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella (TROLLS WORLD TOUR). The story originally came from Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi (LUCY IN THE SKY), and is based in part on personal experience. Sadly, neither of the writers — nor Pam Brady, also credited with the script - is a Kraken.

Instead, as the producer tells Animation World Network, “Chris Kuser, who's our development executive, was working on it with them and they had this idea about a family of sea monsters who had moved to land and were in hiding. It was a very personal story for them because one of the writers’ family was originally from Cuba, and they had moved to Florida. So, some of the story of Ruby learning to assimilate and how to blend in and be one with the community was very personal to him and how he was taught to navigate the world.

RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN opens on June 30.
