Despite the fact that the fourth Shrek movie, SHREK FOREVER AFTER, was billed as "the final chapter," SHREK 5 is set to open in 2026. Maybe that's not a huge surprise, as PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH featured a post-credits scene that suggested the swashbuckler cat would soon be back in the land of Far, Far Away.
While we're waiting for many key details about SHREK 5, we do know a few things. Here's what we can tell you about the long-awaited sequel.
What's the Shrek 5 Release Date?
Universal Pictures will release SHREK 5 in movie theaters on July 1, 2026.
Is There a Trailer for Shrek 5?
There is no proper trailer for SHREK 5 right now. There is an official little reveal video, however, which you can see above.
What's the Plot of Shrek 5?
Right now we don't know what the plot of SHREK 5 will be! Details will probably start to emerge soon. There are some old quotes about ideas for a SHREK 5 story but it's hard to tell if any of those concepts remain in play.
Plans for Shrek 5 Go Back to the Beginning of the Series
As we said, there are some old ideas for a SHREK 5 movie. "Before the first one was finished we talked about what the whole story of Shrek is, and each of the chapters answers questions about the first movie and gives us an insight," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, former president of Dreamworks Animation.
Many years ago, Katzenberg said, "Shrek 3 and 4 are going to reveal other unanswered questions and, finally, in the last chapter, we will understand how Shrek came to be in that swamp, when we meet him in the first movie". So it seems like the idea was once to have Shrek's story come full circle in a way. Whether or not that is still how things will go remains to be seen. After all, when Katzenberg said those things, the idea was that SHREK 5 might be released by around 2013. It has obviously taken a lot longer to move the film forward.
Who's in the Cast of Shrek 5?
We only know three members of the SHREK 5 cast right now, but they might be the most important players: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will return as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona, respectively.
The fact that Diaz will return is a big deal, as she has been mostly retired from acting since 2014. That may have been part of the reason a sequel took so long to make.
Who Is Writing and Directing Shrek 5?
SHREK 5 is written by Michael McCullers, who has worked with Mike Myers for many years. He wrote the first AUSTIN POWERS movie with Myers! He also wrote THE BOSS BABY, among other films.
SHREK 5 is directed by Walt Dohrn, who has been part of the SHREK series for a long time. He voiced characters in the second, third and fourth movies while also working in various capacities in the story department. He was a co-director or director on all three TROLLS movies, and now takes the reins of SHREK 5.
SHREK 5 opens on July 1, 2026.
