After a couple of years in which it seems like every movie took longer to make and release than usual (for good reason) the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG sequel stands out as an exception. The first movie was released in February of 2020, and the sequel is already racing towards theaters. Sonic sure is fast!

When we last saw our fast, blue friend, pretty much all his problems seemed to be solved. He got to live with his pal, Thomas (James Marsden). The government agreed to let him live in peace. He knocked everything off his bucket list. And his nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), was banished far away to the Mushroom Planet. What more could a blue hedgehog video game-turned-movie character want?

Well, that’s the question, isn’t it? Let’s take a look at the first trailer for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 and see what we can expect.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 is slated to be released on April 8, 2022.

The first trailer for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 was released during the 2021 Video Game Awards, which makes sense. It sets up the new story and isn't at all shy about showing off the movie versions of classic Sonic side characters, Tails and Knuckles.

Some time has passed since the end of the first movie, and Tom decides that Sonic is mature enough to look after the house while he and his girlfriend go on vacation. Unfortunately, Tom's plan does not foresee the return of Dr. Robotnik!

Back from the mushroom planet and traveling with the antagonistic Knuckles (Idris Elba), Robotnik is in search of magical emeralds that will give him the power to destroy everything. Only Sonic and his new friend Tails can save the day by beating Robotnik and Knuckles to the emeralds. Luckily they can, you know, run really fast.

Everyone is returning for this one! Ben Schwartz is back to voice Sonic. Jim Carrey is back as Dr. Robotnik, and his mustache has become even more over the top. (Watch out, Hercule Poirot!) James Marsden returns as Tom and Tika Sumpter is back as his wife Maddie. That’s the whole gang!

And of course, joining the cast is Idris Elba as the fan-favorite character Knuckles.

All the key people are returning in this regard too! Jeff Fowler directed once again and Pat Casey and Josh Miller came back to write the new script. If you really liked the first SONIC THE HEDGEHOG movie, this sequel is virtually locked to be just as satisfying. It will have everything you already fell in love with, but more. And probably faster too!

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 opens on April 8, 2022!
